Quilling is an art form with a long history. It is believed to have first been developed in the Middle Ages by nuns and monks using scraps trimmed from the edges of manuscripts they were illuminating. These scraps were rolled around feather quills, giving rise to the term 'quilling'. Once rolled, these shaped would be gilded to give the effect of precious metal, and used to decorate religious pictures and object.
